Hello everyone, and welcome to my summer 2019 newsletter! It’s been a hot one, that’s for sure. I’m in Italy working and have had some of the hottest days and nights I can remember in a long time! But it is all worth it because this summer I got to make my debut at the historic Teatro alla Scala in Verdi’s I MASNADIERI and I couldn’t be happier! We continue on to the Savolinna Festival, to sing 3 performances there next week! Then it’s arena time…2 different productions of Verdi’s masterpiece (and one of my favorite roles) LA TRAVIATA in Athens and Verona. As the summer finishes up, I head to my beloved New York City to make my biggest role debut yet at the Metropolitan Opera: Massenet’s MANON. If you can believe it, I’ve got even more to be grateful for. This year I was selected as the winner of both the Beverly Sills Award and the Richard Tucker Award. These honors mean so much to me as an American singer, and the Richard Tucker gala will be held at Carnegie Hall this fall, the day after my final performance as MANON at the Met! Stay tuned for details on how to purchase tickets, as they become available. |

ReviewsEverything that touches this Cuban-American soprano turns into gold. In Amsterdam we heard her earlier as a phenomenal Nannetta in Falstaff (The National Opera) and Gilda in Rigoletto (The National Opera and the NTR ZaterdagMatinee). Her powerful lyrical soprano sounded like a warm bath. Oropesa’s first aria was greeted with long-lasting applause. Her second aria, "Robert, toi que j'aime" in the fourth act, was a showstopper pur sang. What a beautiful aria, and what a beautiful soprano. Vibrators, coloratures, legato lines, dictation: everything is right at Oropesa. Hopefully she keeps her cool and knows how to guard against roles that she must wisely hold off. This is a voice that is not common today. — Lennaert van Anken • Place de l'Opera

There are some voices in opera that are so sublimely expressive that they stand out like a Michelangelo fresco in a black and white film. Pittsburgh Opera’s season finale production of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” features such a voice. Soprano Lisette Oropesa, no stranger to the Benedum Center stage, was recently granted the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, granted annually to an American singer on the precipice of a dazzling career. Her performance on Saturday showcased impeccable clarity of tone and articulation coupled with exquisite lyricism. Ms. Oropesa, for her part, was enchanting, moving swiftly from coquettish to incendiary as the plot to humble Pasquale coalesces. With her rising prestige confirmed by the Richard Tucker Award (other winners include Renee Fleming and Joyce DiDonato), Ms. Oropesa’s career is likely poised to blossom in the coming seasons. — Jeremy Reynolds • Pittsburgh Post Gazette

The Amalia by Lisette Oropesa shines so much on the vocal and interpretative level, simply perfect in the only authentic light soprano role written by Verdi. A born Belcantista, la Oropesa combines a soft and silky tone, without the harshness that sometimes we find in this type of voices with a phenomenal technique. A light and ethereal singer but always supported by a perfect breath control that allows it to hover safely even in the most inaccessible passages of virtuosity - the colors are impeccable from every point of view - without ever losing the absolute control of the line. But la Oropesa is not only a splendid singer but also an attentive and sensitive interpreter: virtuosity is never an end in itself but always brought into a careful expressive dimension that gives life to the radiant explosion of "Carlo vive?", To the sincere emotion of the scenes with Massimiliano or the impetus of revolt in "Ti scosta or mal nata". — Giordano Cavagnino • GB Opera Magazine

Reflections As the temperatures rise, I’m tempted to take things a little easier, a little slower, but this is not the season to lag back. I have had one of the busiest summers of my life, and one of the most rewarding years ever as well. been a challenge to keep up with the excitement and try to stay grounded, as well as to make time for the things that are the most important to me. My family is so supportive and I’m grateful for that, and I have not ever lost sight of how much my health has to take center stage. The busier things get, the harder it is, and the more is expected. But I’m not slowing down any time soon, and I’ve recommitted to creating space in my life for the enjoyment of the rewards of all this hard work. That doesn’t mean singing less, it just means being even more present on and off the stage. See you along the way, my friends!
