In a wide-ranging interview with Sylvain Fort for Forum Opéra, Lisette discusses her approach to Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda across its Madrid, Salzburg and upcoming Metropolitan Opera productions, her recent role debut as Liù in Turandot at the Arena di Verona, the road from Maria Stuarda to Norma, her Spanish and Cuban recital at the Salzburg Festival, and her philosophy of teaching young singers.

« Lorsqu’un rôle me convient, je préfère pouvoir le conserver plusieurs années, le reprendre et grandir avec lui, plutôt que de l’abandonner aussitôt. »

In English:

“When a role suits me, I prefer to be able to keep it for several years, return to it, and grow with it, rather than abandoning it right away.”

On finding her footing as Liù at the Arena di Verona:

« À Vérone, je me sens précisément libre et ouverte ; ce lieu s’est révélé une bénédiction. »

In English:

“In Verona, I feel precisely free and open – this place has proven to be a blessing.”

On how Maria Stuarda prepared her for Norma, which she debuted in concert this year ahead of a first staged production at the Teatro Real in 2027:

« Maria Stuarda m’a appris à ménager et à répartir mes forces pour Norma. Cette préparation m’a été extrêmement précieuse. »

In English:

“Maria Stuarda taught me how to pace and distribute my strength for Norma. This preparation has been extremely valuable to me.”

Asked about her philosophy of teaching in masterclasses:

« Les chanteurs sont extrêmement sensibles. Se montrer dur ou brutalement critique envers une personne qui apprend encore, donc qui traverse une période de vulnérabilité, n’est pas une méthode efficace. »

In English:

“Singers are extremely sensitive. Being harsh or brutally critical toward someone who is still learning – and therefore going through a vulnerable period – is not an effective method.”
