Hello my friends, and welcome to our Winter 2023 Newsletter!   We hope you had a beautiful holiday season, and are looking forward to an incredible year ahead.  My winter season has got a lot of variety and I’m looking forward to each and every project.   Last month, I enjoyed a happy return to the Metropolitan Opera as Gilda, and this January I’m in Munich singing 3 performances of another Verdi role: Amalia in I masnadieri.  I’ve had the privilege to sing this role a few times now, and it’s one that I find particularly captivating.   On February 4th, I’ll be returning to Salzburg to debut in Mozartwoche 2023, as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem.  I’m very excited to sing this piece again, as it’s one of my all-time favorites.   Then it’s off to Paris to return to another exciting role, Ophélie in Thomas’ immense opera, Hamlet.  This new production stars Ludovic Tézier as the titular baritone, and performances at the Bastille run from March 11th - 30th.   I cannot wait to get started on all of these amazing pieces, each of which has a special place in my heart!  Hope to see you at one of the shows ahead.

Presto Classical Interview

Interview

Lisette is interviewed by Katherine Cooper of Presto Classical about her French Bel Canto album.

❝ How did you hit on the concept for this programme? Did the experience of singing a particular role send you in this direction?

It was actually something that we dreamed up in a restaurant in Paris! My husband and I were talking about what I might do for my next album, and I remember saying that if it was going to be a recital of opera arias I’d naturally gravitate towards bel canto…but pretty much every woman of my voice-type has done an Italian bel canto disc, so we thought it would be interesting to focus on French-language operas by Italian composers. ❞

Classic Voice Cover

Feature

I am very excited to announce that I am on the cover of Classic Voice magazine for November 2022! I had a great time talking with Luca Baccolini about my French Bel-canto album and other topics. You can find the interview on page 40.

Rossini e Donizetti en français. Ovvero? “Si tratta di un disco di musica italiana ma in lingua fran- cese. Il mio primo disco su Mozart non era stata un’idea mia, questo disco invece lo è. Non volevo fare però il solito belcanto di tradizione: preferivo trovare un taglio specifico e più interessante. Ho cercato musiche di Belli- ni ma non ho trovato niente in francese, nonostante abbia passato molto tempo della sua vita in Francia. Così ho virato su Rossini e Donizetti”.

Big-hearted, quirky, fun: Richard Jones' Alcina for The Royal Opera

Nov. 9, 2022

When an opera has a plot as convoluted and comprehensively daft as Handel’s Alcina, one’s enjoyment depends principally on one thing: how well can the singers sell me their text? Can they take me out of the general state of battiness and transport me to a place where I truly believe the love, the rage or the fear? In the case of Lisette Oropesa, the answer is a resounding “yes”: if I were an Eskimo and Oropesa was selling fridges, I’d be at the front of the queue!

Leaving aside Oropesa’s technical excellence, it’s the emotional investment that got me every time. Her opening aria “Di', cor mio, quanto t'amai” lifted me far away to a happy land of romance. “Ombre pallide”, the Act 2 closer, had me melting with sympathy – despite this being an evil sorceress complaining to the dark spirits about the loss of her powers.

Oropesa sets the bar so high that you have to feel a level of sympathy for anyone sharing a stage with her

RIGOLETTO ~ A Matinee at The Met

Dec. 12, 2022

And her vocalism was ravishing. Strong emotional currents run thru everything Lisette sings; she can find just the right colour for every note and word, and it all seems perfectly spontaneous. A magical, palpable  hush settled over the House during Lisette's "Caro nome": an exquisite portrait of a young girl on the brink, the innocence of the words underscored by a subtle sense of longing. In the ensuing scenes, phrase after phrase of captivating tone and nuance - from her defiance in the vendetta duet to the heart-wrenching poignancy of her farewell to her father - showed again what a thoughtful and unique artist this soprano is.

Reflections

As I look to the year ahead, it’s easy to get a bit overwhelmed, as I’m singing new roles, making multiple house debuts, recording an album, and returning to a few roles that I haven’t sung in several years.   There’s concert work, and my repertoire is beginning to spread out even more, with everything from Handel and Mozart, lots of Bel canto, Verdi, French opera, to Zarzuela.  The only role I’m singing twice this year is Lucia, and both times it’s in a version I’ve never done:  Once in the original keys at La Scala-Milano (more on that in the next newsletter!) and once in French at Aix en Provence.   It’s definitely not going to be boring!   I’m naturally a very studious person, but I don’t enjoy cramming new repertoire into a short learning span, so my pacing is going to be put to the test this year as I navigate all of these hurdles ahead.  There’s no time to waste!   That being said, time management is something that I will have to be thoughtful about, as the stress of looking too far ahead can keep me from enjoying the moment and doing the best I can in the present.  I’ll need to be reminding myself to “run the mile you are on” as I have in the past when running marathons.   It’s all about the journey.
