Lisette Oropesa

Hello friends and T-G-I-FALL!!!  I just had a birthday and it was so spectacular I don’t think it could ever be topped!  Thank you all so much for your messages, and for continuing to support the work that I do both on stage and off.  I’m so blessed!  As you’ll hear in my video, I’m around the corner from my role debut as Violetta in LA TRAVIATA, a role that has been in my psyche since I was very young, because my mom was a spectacular soprano and this was her role!  Preparing for this has been life changing, and I can’t wait to bring it all together onstage.  After that I head to Madrid to make my company debut at the Teatro Real as Gilda in RIGOLETTO, another role that is very close to my heart.  My dad suffered from muscular dystrophy before he passed, and growing up he was very protective, and also quite the jokester.  It’s amazing how much he reminds me of one of the greatest characters in opera.  Honoring my parents in these pivotal roles is what this fall is all about for me!  There is still so much to learn and I look forward to growing into these roles even more. Again, I cannot thank you enough for the role that you play in my life.  For a young singer on the road, the ability to keep in touch is so important; I’m so glad we live in an age where this is possible!

Upcoming Performances

LA TRAVIATA Opera Philadelphia Violetta

In Verdi’s classic work, Parisian courtesan Violetta surrenders her last hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover Alfredo’s reputation. Though she is a “fallen woman,” Verdi’s empathetic and vivid score maintains her dignity and the audience’s compassion. Daring production choices encourage modernity and tradition to collide via a golden-hued Baroque stage and a midcentury fashion sensibility. This bold setting creates a unique canvas upon which to experience an unforgettable La traviata. October 2, 4, 7, 9, 11 Special Free #OnTheMall screening October 16th. Academy of Music Philadelphia, PA

RIGOLETTO Teatro Real Gilda

The character of Rigoletto, Verdi himself said, seems worthy of Shakespeare. Verdi portrays the hunchback jester as a character combining hatred for corruption with love for his sick daughter, who falls victim to all the plots planned by the jester himself. With this work, the composer began a new period in his conception of musical drama, with freer operatic forms. The elegant staging by David McVicar manages to recreate the oppressive atmosphere of the court and delves into the ambivalence of the main character, who is monstrous on the outside and fragile on the inside, showing the depth of abasement a human can sink to through fear. December 2, 5, 8, 11, 16, 20, 27, 29 Teatro Real Madrid, ES

Reviews

Figaro Charms in Well-Cast S.F. Opera Revival • June 16, 2015 Lisette Oropesa is a charming Susanna. Her voice has a gorgeous delicate quality to it but still has volume. Her "Deh vieni, non tardar" was unstrained and she managed to do a perfect martial arts flip of Figaro when she loses her temper with him later in the act. Charlise Tiee • San Francisco Classical Voice

Opera News - La Fille du Régiment • Aug. 1, 2015 For her own part, Oropesa’s Marie lacked neither virtuosity nor personality. With solid high notes, accurate coloratura and an endless supply of golden-age trills (I stopped counting after five), this endearing artist ran a vocal marathon that might have paralleled the physical feat she was preparing to run in Pittsburgh Marathon the next morning. Apparently untiring, she looked and sounded as fresh at the opera’s conclusion as she had been at her first entrance. With strikingly clear diction, she negotiated with facility not just the role’s vocal fireworks, but also the legato and tenderness of Marie’s slower solos, known in the original French as “Il faut partir” and “Par le rang.” Robert Croan • Opera News

Reflections

Ever since we started sending these out every quarter, I feel even closer to those who continue to support my career in such a significant way.  Knowing that you guys appreciate the work an artist puts into their craft, and that you reach out and share what it means to you, makes it all the more rewarding when I step out on stage.   It’s a great gift, and it’s also a great responsibility, because we open the flood gates of deep emotions and human connection in a divine way.  Thank you so much, dear friends, for allowing me to share this blessing with you now and hopefully forever!
