Lucia di Lammermoor DVD cover from Teatro alla Scala with Lisette Oropesa and Juan Diego Florez.

Lisette's 2023 Teatro alla Scala Lucia di Lammermoor arrives on DVD next month. C Major Entertainment releases the two-disc set on May 18, 2026 — capturing the spring 2023 La Scala run with Juan Diego Flórez in his first La Scala Edgardo and Riccardo Chailly on the podium.

A new production, four years in the making

This was La Scala's first new staging of Lucia since 1967, when Claudio Abbado conducted Renata Scotto in the Pier'Alli production that became one of the house's defining benchmarks. Yannis Kokkos's new staging was originally commissioned to open the 2020–2021 season on December 7, 2020, then postponed by COVID; rescheduled to open the 2021–2022 season the following December, it was cancelled days before the premiere when an outbreak struck the cast. It finally premiered on April 13, 2023 and ran for eight performances through May 5.

See the run page for full performance dates.

The edition: 1835 Naples keys and the glass harmonica

Chailly led the new Gabriele Dotto and Roger Parker critical edition, which restores roughly thirty-three measures historically cut and uses the glass harmonica (the instrument Donizetti originally specified, replaced in standard performance practice by flute) in the Mad Scene. The cast also performed in the higher 1835 Naples keys — the version Donizetti adapted for the San Carlo — rather than the more familiar transposed-down readings of the twentieth century.

"The most significant aspect is that we will sing in the keys of the 1835 Naples version, with practically all the arias in higher keys. In the mad scene the colors will become lighter, and I'm very curious about that — we may hear a different character, other feelings."

— Lisette to Amadeus Magazine / MusicPaper, March 2023

The Mad Scene

Critics responded to the combination of glass harmonica and the higher tessitura. Laura Servidei wrote in Bachtrack:

"Her Mad Scene was moving and exciting, Oropesa's voice and the glass harmonica perfectly matched, while the violins supported them with a metallic, sinister tremolo."

Together the two recordings give listeners and viewers two complementary readings of one of the defining Lucias of Lisette's career so far.
